Office Art: Making a Workplace Feel More Human

Office Art: Making a Workplace Feel More Human

Office art can bring warmth and a sense of place into the spaces where people spend so much of their lives. Seeing my Queensland island maps at Cook Medical was a lovely reminder of that.

Emily and Belinda turned my delivery into a little office tour. I arrived with artwork and left fascinated by what happens behind the doors.

This office features my banksia print.

Art in the workplace: a visit to Cook Medical

Cook Medical develops and manufactures minimally invasive medical devices. I watched technicians painstakingly sew devices together, working within a minuscule margin for error.

I couldn’t decide whether to be more in awe of the human body, the devices designed to work within it, or the technicians assembling them with extraordinary care.

Queensland island maps giving a sense of place

The maps were designed to give individual rooms their own Queensland identity. I always relish the research stage of map illustration: natural landmarks, local history, favourite places to eat and things to explore. A borderline unreasonable amount of daydreaming was involved.

The collection features:

  • Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island)

  • Mulgumpin (Moreton Island)

  • Woppa (Great Keppel Island)

  • Goochie Mudlo (Coochiemudlo Island)

  • Erobin (King Island)

  • Hamilton Island

Alongside photographs of Moreton Bay’s loveliest islands and colourful works by Debra Hood, they connected the workplace to the landscapes beyond its walls.

Australian office decor with personality

Emily and Belinda are clearly creative kin, choosing artwork and thoughtful details that make a technical workplace feel designed for actual humans. Steely navy, crisp white, timber and greenery made the renovated areas feel polished but welcoming.

The familiar grey office partitions in the unfinished section made the newly renovated spaces feel even fresher, giving off the energy of a particularly zesty juice bar. Belinda had even chosen coffee tables with a shape that gave a playful nod to a surfboard.

Thoughtful office art can quietly remind us where we are, what we value, and that someone considered how a room might make us feel.

Choosing wall art for an office begins with a question: which places would you enjoy being reminded of every day?

Explore my map and Australiana prints, or ask me about commissioning a custom map of the places you love. The island maps will be joining the collection soon.
