Finding joy in the everyday

I’ve always been a bit of a magpie. Antique markets, second-hand shops, tucked-away corners on my travels, I love a teaspoon that’s clearly stirred a scandal or two. These finds always find their way into my paintings.
Still life painting has a rich and storied past, stretching back to the Dutch Golden Age, when artists began to elevate everyday objects, fruit bowls, flowers, teacups, as worthy of deep attention. In style ever since. There’s something enduringly tender about the way still life art invites you to pause and truly see. Maybe you’ll spot a Billy tea tin that reminds you of childhood afternoon teas, geraniums from your aunt’s garden, or a milk jug with a past, each one quietly brimming with memory.

I was first inspired to paint still lifes by the inimitable Margaret Olley, on a visit to the Tweed Gallery which houses a beautiful collection of her works. Her belief that an interior reveals as much about a person as a portrait has stayed with me ever since.

My still lifes are little portraits too, told through vintage treasures, second-hand finds, and flowers from a friend or my own garden. They speak of comfort, nostalgia, and the joy found in ordinary moments. We need that in our lives.

By arranging these vintage treasures, homegrown flowers, and everyday finds, I’m composing a portrait of a life well-lived.

Meet the artist

Hello, I'm Rebecca Eddison, an Australian landscape artist and contemporary oil painter creating expressive landscape and still life paintings inspired by travel, treasured objects and the beauty hidden within everyday life. With a background in interior design and nearly two decades working across art and design, I’ve always believed the things we choose to surround ourselves with affect our moods in a very real way. Paintings are not just decor. They’re atmosphere. They’re comfort. They’re memory, made visible.

My paintings celebrate colour, light and the stories woven into familiar places. I'm endlessly collecting inspiration, whether it's an old piece of pottery from an antique shop, a weatherboard cottage, wildflowers gathered on a walk, or a winding country road discovered on holiday.

I create art as a gentle antidote to a fast-paced world. There's something deeply human about seeing the marks of another person's hand in a painting, the unexpected brushstrokes, the layered texture, the happy accidents that can never be perfectly repeated. I hope my work brings a sense of warmth, nostalgia and calm into your home, and that you find a painting you'll treasure for years to come.
