"Desert Tree” - Australian outback gum tree painting
I painted this twisted gum tree painting while camping out west near Bollon. One soft, golden morning, I asked my husband to drop me in a quiet paddock with my paints, a stool, and a thermos of tea. Just me, the breeze, and the hum of cicadas.
This is what I saw: a twisted eucalyptus, weathered and wise, stretching skyward through the heat. I painted it alla prima as the shadows shifted and the day warmed around me. The colours—rusty ochres, dusky purples, clay pinks, and a dreamy pastel sky—blended on the board just as they did on the land.
It’s a gum tree on red soil, but it’s also a feeling: of stillness, solitude, and the quiet comfort of the bush. Made for those who feel most alive under an open sky, this piece holds the hush of dusk light, the still heat, and the soft breeze through gum leaves.
