I painted this twisted gum tree painting while camping out west near Bollon. One soft, golden morning, I asked my husband to drop me in a quiet paddock with my paints, a stool, and a thermos of tea. Just me, the breeze, and the hum of cicadas.

This is what I saw: a twisted eucalyptus, weathered and wise, stretching skyward through the heat. I painted it alla prima as the shadows shifted and the day warmed around me. The colours—rusty ochres, dusky purples, clay pinks, and a dreamy pastel sky—blended on the board just as they did on the land.

It’s a gum tree on red soil, but it’s also a feeling: of stillness, solitude, and the quiet comfort of the bush. Made for those who feel most alive under an open sky, this piece holds the hush of dusk light, the still heat, and the soft breeze through gum leaves. It’s for anyone who dreams of slow days, dusty roads, and trees that lean into the wind with stubborn elegance.

landscape painting of a desert gum tree doing its bendy, beautiful thing out in the middle of nowhere. A memory made into paint — full of light, warmth and place. Add this outback eucalyptus oil painting to your space, and let it help you pause, breathe, and remember the beauty of stillness.

Meet the Artist

Hello, I'm Rebecca Eddison, an Australian artist creating original oil paintings inspired by travel, nature, and the beautiful objects that quietly collect around a life well lived.

I believe the homes we love most are never decorated overnight. They are thoughtfully collected over time, layered with memories, heirlooms, favourite books, wild garden flowers, and treasures gathered from travels near and far. My paintings are created with that same philosophy of collected living, celebrating the stories, colours and places that make a house feel deeply personal.

Working primarily in oils, I paint expressive still lifes, landscapes and figurative works from my Queensland studio, while also heading outdoors whenever I can to paint en plein air. Sketchbooks, photographs and quick studies become the starting point for larger paintings, helping me capture not just how a place looked, but how it felt. I have an incurable magpie's eye for patterned textiles, weathered pottery, vintage finds and timeworn objects, many of which find their way into my compositions.

Before becoming a full-time artist, I studied Interior Design, and that love of colour has never left me. Rather than simply recording what I see, I use colour as a language of mood, layering expressive brushwork to evoke warmth, nostalgia and the quiet beauty of everyday life.

My hope is that each painting becomes more than something beautiful to hang on a wall. I want it to become part of your own story, bringing colour, conversation and a sense of artful living into your home. Because life moves quickly enough already. Sometimes the greatest luxury is simply having something beautiful that reminds us to pause.
