“Still” is an original Australian bush painting, created as part of a series while on a rural camping trip to Bollon, Queensland—just me, my oil paints, and a swiftly changing sky. (I was technically with others, but in an uncharacteristically antisocial hiatus, I snuck off solo for the day to paint.)

Some paintings take days. Layers and layers, fuss and faff. But I’ve always preferred the energy and immediacy of painting en plein air. This is one of those.

I set up in a paddock that was more sky than soil, shaded by a couple of lanky gums and accompanied only by a darting hawk.

The clouds were shape-shifting by the minute, and the light danced across the field faster than my thoughts. Something bit me on the ankle (the jury’s still out on what it was). I didn’t mind. I was too lost in the moment. This is the joy of painting outdoors: everything is alive, moving, unrepeatable.

I’ve called it “Still” because that’s how I felt—even while everything around me was in motion. It was the kind of stillness that only comes from solitude—that rare, rooted quiet you carry in your chest. I think it was the deep knowledge that I was more alone than I had been in a long time. But in the best way.

This one’s for the romantics of the Australian bush landscape. Hang it where you need a breath of bush air—above your kettle, beside your desk, or in the hallway to catch the light. Let it take you somewhere a little slower, dustier, and more olive-green.

About the artist

I'm Rebecca Eddison, an artist finding joy in the authentic textures of oil and watercolour. I capture the world through figurative, landscape, and still-life paintings. Practising art as a warm hug for the soul—it’s all about how colour can tickle emotions and stir up delightful nostalgia in all of us.

Armed with a spirited joie de vivre and an unquenchable thirst for travel, I paint not just to decorate, but to sprinkle moments of pause, colour, and joyous conversation into your home.

My creative journey is fueled by travel, plein air painting, photography, and countless sketchbooks filled with fleeting inspirations. I have a magpie-like obsession with patterned textiles and aged heirlooms, those charming objects with a story to tell, which often find their way into my compositions.

With a background in Interior Design, I can't resist the allure of colour theory. I layer hues with expressive brushwork, exploring its ability to transform the mood.

Think of each piece as a little reminder to savour life’s simple pleasures, embrace nature, and pat yourself on the back for making your home brighter.
